1979 - Kim was diagnosed with "Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome". Initial histoplasmosis reaction is often no more severe than the common cold. However, it can later cause ocular histoplasmosis syndrome, a leading cause of vision loss in Americans ages 20 to 40. In a very small percentage of those with scarring in critical areas of the eye, fluid build-up can not only cause distortion, but loss of eyesight.
Due to the extent of her loss of eyesight, she was declared legally blind in 1986. Her professional life as she knew it was over.
In the years following her initial diagnosis, Kim was constantly learning how to manipulate and use the eyesight she was left with. Work the artist has produced since 1986 is in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. Kim returned to public shows of her work in 2008. |
